Description
These 10 bare root Brittany Blue willow cuttings, 30cm long, come from a smallholding in Caerphilly, Wales, where they are grown with care by a basketmaker who has been cultivating and weaving willow since 2009. Brittany Blue is admired for its refined blue-grey colour and naturally straight growth, producing clean, smooth rods ideal for basketry, sculpture, and ornamental planting.
This variety brings a calm, cool tone to woven work, offering subtle contrast alongside warmer-coloured willows. In the garden, it creates elegant structure and soft winter colour. Willow also offers wider environmental benefits. It establishes quickly, improves soil structure, and provides valuable habitat for birds, insects, and small mammals. Planting your own willow gives you a renewable, sustainable material to harvest year after year.
Cultivation Instructions
Plant the cuttings through weed suppressant fabric to help them establish quickly. Prepare the fabric before your order arrives for easier planting. For basketry, space cuttings 30cm apart with 60cm between rows. Block planting often gives the best results, while wider spacing lets the cuttings grow into larger rods or trees.
Plant your cuttings as soon as possible. If you can’t plant immediately, store them in a cool place or in the fridge inside a plastic bag. You can plant them until the end of March while the weather stays cold. Cut basketry rods back to the original cutting each winter after the first year to encourage fresh, straight growth.
