Description

These 10 bare-root Brittany Green willow cuttings, 30 cm long, are grown on a smallholding in Caerphilly by a basketmaker who has been cultivating and weaving willow since 2009. Brittany Green is known for its fine, slender rods and almost striped appearance. Fresh growth shows a clean green colour with a reddish tip, and once dried the rods shift to a dark green or grey-green tone with subtle purplish brown hues. They grow with a lovely uniform thickness, which makes them particularly good for basketry, decorative pieces and smaller living projects.

Brittany Green establishes quickly and brings both practical and environmental benefits. It improves soil structure, supports wildlife and gives you a reliable, renewable material you can harvest again and again. Growing your own willow is a brilliant way to explore new colours and textures in your work while keeping your materials sustainable and close to home.

Cultivation Instructions

Plant the cuttings through weed suppressant fabric to help them establish quickly. Prepare the fabric before your order arrives for easier planting. For basketry, space cuttings 30cm apart with 60cm between rows. Block planting often gives the best results, while wider spacing lets the cuttings grow into larger rods or trees.

Plant your cuttings as soon as possible. If you can’t plant immediately, store them in a cool place or in the fridge inside a plastic bag. You can plant them until the end of March while the weather stays cold. Cut basketry rods back to the original cutting each winter after the first year to encourage fresh, straight growth.
