Description
These 10 bare-root Cohu Blue willow cuttings, 30 cm long, are grown on a smallholding in Caerphilly by a basketmaker who has been cultivating willow since 2009. Cohu Blue is described as a slender-leaved variety of Salix purpurea, capable of growing up to about 5 m under good conditions, and is valued for its blue-green foliage and colourful stems. The bark and stems are noted for a blue-purple hue and the variety is regarded as an ornamental willow for its visual appeal.
Cohu Blue establishes well on a range of soils and thrives in full sun to part shade, offering both decorative value and material for craft use. By growing your own Cohu Blue you gain access to a reliable source of elegant rods and stems that bring subtle colour and refined texture to your basketry or garden projects.
Cultivation Instructions
Plant the cuttings through weed suppressant fabric to help them establish quickly. Prepare the fabric before your order arrives for easier planting. For basketry, space cuttings 30cm apart with 60cm between rows. Block planting often gives the best results, while wider spacing lets the cuttings grow into larger rods or trees.
Plant your cuttings as soon as possible. If you can’t plant immediately, store them in a cool place or in the freezer inside a plastic bag. You can plant them until the end of March while the weather stays cold. Cut basketry rods back to the original cutting each winter after the first year to encourage fresh, straight growth.
