Description

10 Dark Dicks willow cuttings grow on a smallholding in Caerphilly under the care of a basketmaker with over 15 years’ experience. Salix purpurea Dark Dicks produces slender rods that can reach up to 2 m (6 ft) in a single season. Basket weavers are quickly favouring this beautiful willow. Its stems show lovely colours with hints of pink, making it ideal for woven work or decorative planting.

Dark Dicks grows well in moist, well-drained soil and tolerates full sun to partial shade. Coppicing each year produces a reliable supply of coloured rods. With its graceful form and rich seasonal colour, basket weavers can use Dark Dicks for living willow features, garden hedging, or any project that benefits from a versatile and visually appealing willow variety.

Cultivation Instructions

Plant the cuttings through weed suppressant fabric to help them establish quickly. Prepare the fabric before your order arrives for easier planting. For basketry, space cuttings 30cm apart with 60cm between rows. Block planting often gives the best results, while wider spacing lets the cuttings grow into larger rods or trees.

Plant your cuttings as soon as possible. If you can’t plant immediately, store them in a cool place or in the freezer inside a plastic bag. You can plant them until the end of March while the weather stays cold. Cut basketry rods back to the original cutting each winter after the first year to encourage fresh, straight growth.
