Description
10 x 30cm/12in long Packing Twine willow cuttings to be planted between December and March.
Cultivation
Firstly, plant your willow cuttings through weed suppressant fabric to give your willow the best chance to establish. It is a good idea to prepare the weed suppressant for planting before your willow cuttings arrive.
Planting distances depend on what you want from your willow cuttings. If you are planting for basketry willows I recommend planting 30cm between willow cuttings with 60cm between rows. From my experience block planting the willow cuttings seems to give the best results. If you wish for your willows to grow larger or even into trees then increase the planting distances as required.
When you receive your willow cuttings please plant them as soon as possible. However, if you can’t plant them straight away put your willow cuttings in a cool place or even in the freezer wrapped in a plastic bag. As long as the weather is still cold you can plant your willow cuttings until the end of March.
If you’re growing willow for basketry, cut it back to the original cutting every winter after the first year’s growth.
Your order will include a plant passport and planting instructions.
Sarah Hatton cuts the willow to produce your willow cuttings from her smallholding in Caerphilly, Wales.
